Chickens must be fed daily in order to produce eggs. Chickens can be fed inside the coop by using chicken feed or by keeping them outside. Unlike the barn animals Chickens do not need grass planted outside in order to eat while outside. Keep in mind that the chickens eat over night. So if you move them inside at night they need to be fed chicken feed.
If chickens are kept outside in a storm they can blow away and die, and if left outside overnight without a fence they can be eaten by wild animals and die.
Chickens can be hatched from eggs using the incubator in your coop. An egg takes 3 days to hatch and then it takes a chick 7 days to become an adult chicken. The chicken will not produce an egg on the first day they turn an adult.
